Plans are available in every state except California and Hawaii.

Service Fees

When you set up your policy with AFC, you can choose from several service fee levels; $75, $100, or $125. You must pay the service fee to the technician when they make the initial diagnosis.

While it isn’t necessary to get a home inspection before purchasing a plan with AFC, you have to wait 30 days before they’ll approve a claim. Problems with covered systems or appliances will be considered “pre-existing” and your claim will be denied if it’s within the first 30 days.

Payout Caps

Payout caps vary per item. For example, you’ll find that appliances have a $2,000 payout cap. Plumbing systems have a payout cap of up to $500 per membership term and ductwork up to $250. You should read your contract to see what are the exact payout caps per item in your particular AFC plan.

Coverage

AFC offers coverage for many appliances and systems. You can also purchase additional coverage for an additional fee.

Systems:

  • Air conditioning/cooling
  • Heating systems
  • Water heater
  • Electrical systems
  • Plumbing systems
  • Ductwork

Appliances:

  • Clothes washer
  • Clothes dryer
  • Kitchen refrigerator
  • Oven/range/stove/cooktop
  • Dishwasher
  • Built-in microwave
  • Garage door opener
  • Garbage disposal

Additional coverage:

  • Sump pump
  • Hot water dispenser
  • Stand-alone freezer
  • Septic system
  • Central vacuum
  • Well pump
  • Tank-less water heater
  • Pool & spa

Exclusions

AFC customers must wait 30 days to file their first claim or request service. Claims made within the first 30 days of owning this coverage will be denied as a pre-existing condition.

Each covered system or appliance has a detailed list of what’s covered and what’s excluded on AFC’s website. For example, a kitchen refrigerator is covered under the appliances policy. Problems with the following kitchen refrigerator parts are not covered:

  • Touch panels and displays
  • Leaks and water lines
  • Freon and coils
  • Door hinges
  • Valves
  • Removable parts
  • Filter

If you have more than one refrigerator, you must add coverage for that unit, which costs more than the regular appliance plan.

Air conditioning is covered under a systems policy. Problems with the following air conditioner parts are not covered:

  • Window units
  • Improperly installed systems
  • Commercial equipment
  • Crane rental
  • Leak detection
  • Maintenance-related items
  • Non-mechanical parts
  • Accessories

Each system or appliance has a specific set of exclusions. If a licensed contractor reports that the problem with your system or appliance falls under the list of exclusions, your claim will be denied.

AFC has sample contracts available on their website. You should check these out as well as review your own contract carefully to be aware of exclusions. According to AFC, you must contact them “immediately” upon discovery of a problem with a system/appliance if you want coverage.

Claims & Repairs

If you decide to purchase coverage from AFC, you’ll have to wait 30 days from the first day of coverage to initiate a claim. Start by opening a new service request by calling 855-613-4555 or 770-973-2400. You can also initiate a claim by filling out the company’s online form.

You can use a licensed contractor or AFC will help you find a local licensed contractor to diagnose your problem. AFC customers must set up their own appointment with a licensed contractor. The technician provides the customer with a diagnosis and submits a request for authorization to order parts and supplies online.

If AFC approves the repair or authorizes the replacement of the covered appliance or system, they’ll pay the technician directly. AFC must provide authorization to issue reimbursement to a homeowner.

Customer Service

AFC customers can reach customer service or initiate a claim by calling 855-613-4555 or 770-973-2400. If you have questions about AFC’s services, you can also reach customer service via email at info@afchomeclub.com.

Customer service reps are available 24/7, but they may not be able to connect you with a technician after regular business hours or on weekends. You can contact a licensed contractor for after-hours service and submit those repairs to AFC for reimbursement.

AFC has a “B” rating from the Better Business Bureau (BBB). The site shows that AFC has been in business for 11 years. There have been 162 complaints from AFC customers to the BBB in the past three years.

If you decide to cancel your coverage with AFC, you must contact customer service. They may charge a $75 cancellation fee and take any claims costs out of your prorated refund.

Final Thoughts

AFC is one of only a few home warranty companies that allow homeowners to choose any licensed contractor. The package options offer coverage for many systems and appliances. While there’s not much opportunity to customize plans, AFC could be a good choice if you want a service plan that covers systems and appliances that are normally expensive to fix or replace.
