About Axos Bank

Axos Bank lays claim to being one of the oldest digital banks in the world. The company was founded as Bank of Internet USA in 1999 and rebranded to Axos Bank in 2018. Nowadays, Axos Bank is based in San Diego, California, where it has grown to a workforce of over 1,000 and is the consumer-facing arm of Axos Financial.

Axos has built a solid reputation over two decades of trading as an online bank. The company is well known for its excellent APYs, ATM reimbursements, and one of the market’s most rewarding ranges of checking accounts. To this day, the company remains online-only, with the lack of branches resulting in better value financial products for its customers.

Axos Bank Personal Loans Terms & Requirements

If you already have an account with Axos Bank and need short-term funding, then an Axos Bank personal loan is worth considering. However, none of the terms of requirements for obtaining an Axos Bank loan are overly attractive or market-leading. In fact, the minimum credit score of 700 will eliminate many from being eligible for a personal loan.

Loan Requirements

  • A minimum credit score of 700
  • Two years of good credit history
  • Income that can be verified

Loan Terms

  • APR’s range between 7.15% and 17.99%
  • Loan amounts range from $5,000 to $50,000
  • Origination fees of 1% to 2%
  • A late fee of $15

Repayment Terms

  • You can take out a loan for between 36 and 72 months
  • No prepayment fee on early repayment of loans

The loan terms for an Axos personal loan are solid, if unspectacular. There is nothing market-leading in the terms and requirements, but nothing is below market average either. If you want a personal loan from an established company with a trustworthy record, it is worth considering an Axos Bank personal loan.

How to Apply

We started the Axos Bank personal loan application, having been tempted by the knowledge that we could pre-qualify in minutes. To kickstart the process, we had to complete a simple form stating how much money we wanted to borrow, how long for, and what we would use the money for.

We then started the process by entering our personal information, which included name, date of birth, citizenship status, email, and phone details. Following this, we entered details of our home, including ownership, mortgage/rent payments, and time at residence. The subsequent form was concerned with our employment information.

This form was followed by detailing our assets, including checking amounts, savings, 401K, stocks, and others. Also, this was the final information required before creating a login. We could then submit the application for pre-qualification. Thankfully, our application was successful, and we could move on to the next stage.

At this point, we checked the amount we wanted to borrow and could see the APR associated with the loan amount and term. We were happy with the APR, so we proceeded with the loan. We now had to upload our SSN, proof of ID, and income. Once Axos accepted these verification documents, we signed the Loan Agreement. The funds arrived in our account within 2 days.

The process was easy and quick, and we were happy with how quickly we received the funds.

Qualification Requirements

Application Steps & Time Frames

The application process for a personal loan from Axos Bank took us less than ten minutes. Axos Bank state that personal loans will be paid in 1-3 working days after the application process is complete. In our case, this was true, as we received funding within two days.

The mortgage terms offered by Axos Bank are reasonable and, while not market-leading, are undoubtedly competitive. This is especially the case if you have an Axos Bank checking account, as you can avoid the lender fee of $995.

How to Apply

We chose to apply for an Axos Bank mortgage via a desktop, but you can also apply via your smartphone or tablet. After navigating to the personal banking mortgage section, we hit apply now and were greeted with a basic information screen.

We then needed to create a username and password and set our security questions and answers. We could then start with the mortgage application process.

We stated that we were making offers and were greeted with the following screen. It was beneficial to have the sidebar to know where we were in the application process.

Step 1

Personal details

Working through the required sections took around 15 minutes. This process included providing our personal details, including income, assets held, the house we wanted to purchase, and making our declarations. After this, we applied, which initiated the soft credit pull. Thankfully we received preliminary approval within a minute.

Next, we had to provide proof of ID and income, which we could easily do online by uploading the relevant documents. Once we had done this, we had access to the many mortgage types and rates that Axos Bank offered. We simply selected the rate and term that we wanted and applied. It was as simple as that. We signed the Loan Agreement and waited for the process to finish.

Qualification Requirements

Min. credit score 620 for conventional loans
Debt-to-income ratio Not stated
Citizenship Available for US citizens only
Age Minimum age of 18
Job Status Must have steady employment and be able to provide proof of income

Rewards Checking

Rewards checking offers a tiered interest rate that can earn you up to 1.25% APY. You get the same other benefits as an Essential Checking account, but you can also earn interest. You need a minimum $50 deposit to open a Rewards Checking account. To make the 1.25% APY, you need to meet the following criteria:

  • Monthly direct deposits of above $1,500 earn you 0.4% APY
  • Using your debit card at least 10 times a month (at least $3 per transaction) earns 0.3% APY
  • Having an average daily balance of above $2,500 earns 0.2% APY

  • Using your Rewards Checking Account to make full payment on an Axos consumer loan earns 0.15% APY

The Cashback Checking accounts allow you to earn on your spending instead of earning interest. The Cashback Checking account gives you up to 1% cashback on spending from this account.

First Checking

The First Checking Account is a joint account for children between 13 and 17. Your teen can be taught responsible money management while earning 0.25% APY. No fees are incurred with this account, and Axos reimburse up to $12 in ATM fees per month. Spending limits are also in place to ensure your teen doesn’t overspend.

Golden Checking

Golden Checking is an account specifically for those aged 55 or older. You need $50 to open a Golden Checking account, and your money will earn 0.20% APY. There are no associated fees and no minimum balance requirements.

High Yield Savings

Axos Bank offers a High Yield Savings account where you can earn up to 0.61% APY. This rate applies to balances up to $25,000. Balances above this amount earn a lower APY, down to 0.15% for balances greater than $100,000. There are no minimum balance requirements or maintenance fees, but you will need a minimum deposit of $250 to open a High Yield Savings account.

High Yield Money Market

The High Yield Money Market account requires an initial deposit of $1,000. Once opened, the account has a 0.25% APY on all balances held. While higher APY money market accounts are available, Axos Bank stands out by charging no fees.

CDs

CDs allow customers to earn a fixed amount of interest over a specific period of time. CDs require a minimum deposit of $1,000 and will earn 0.20% APY. Axos Bank offers CDs between 3 months and 5 years, all of which offer an APY of 0.20%. There are penalties payable for early withdrawal from a CD. Its vital to note that other online banks offer more attractive CD rates than Axos Bank.

Opening an Account With Axos Bank

Having been impressed by Axos Bank’s credentials and reputation, we decided to open an Essential Checking account. Axos Bank’s website is very clear, and we headed to the Personal Banking section and selected Essential Checking. We got started by clicking the “Open an Account” button.

Welcome screen

Axos then asked us if we wanted to add a High Yield Savings account, and given the high APY of 0.61%, we proceeded with this option.

We created our login details with Axos Bank and proceeded to update the forms with all of our personal data. This included name, address, SSN, address, phone, and email, which are all required to apply for an Axos Bank checking account.

We then got to choose what account type we wanted, which was an individual account. We then passed the verification protocols by uploading our photo ID and submitting a selfie to confirm our identity. Then we confirmed our address and SSN again for the security process. Axos Bank needs this information to comply with KYC security measures.

Once we’d submitted our personal data and proved our identification and address, we were ready to apply for an account. The account was accepted in minutes, and the next step was to fund the account, which we did following easy-to-understand, step-by-step guidance.

The process to open an Essential Checking account with Axos Bank was very quick and easy, and we would recommend it to people looking for a stress-free online experience.
