How to Buy a Home Insurance Policy Through Lemonade

As you’d expect from an online-only offering, Lemonade home insurance is easy to obtain via its website. We headed to the Homeowners section of the site to get started.

After selecting “Check Our Prices”, we were greeted by Lemonade’s virtual assistant, Maya, who walked us through the application process. We determined that we didn’t already have a Lemonade account and started the process by entering our name, our address, and that we were thinking of switching. Maya then asked about our property type.

All questions are posed individually, so there are no long forms to scroll through. We gave more details about the house, including house type, size, and the quality of furnishings inside the property. We then had to provide the house’s age and if there had been any major refurbishments done, including to the roof. After entering all of these details, we were presented with a summary of our house details.

We then had to enter further details about the house, including whether there was a fire alarm, burglar alarm, and our mortgage status. We entered that we had not made any previous claims in the past 5 years and inputted our SSN. Finally, we provided our email address and date of birth to receive our quote.

At this point, you can also choose any add-ons required, and the site clarifies what is not covered. These include earthquakes and high-risk breed dog attacks, so if you have a dog classed as high risk, any damage caused by it will not be covered.

We were happy with the quote provided and decided to proceed by scrolling to the bottom of the page and selecting “Finalize Payment”, confirming our start date.

The whole process was super straightforward, and this, coupled with the excellent quote received, means that we would recommend Lemonade to people looking for homeowners insurance.

All claims made to Lemonade are filed online with the Lemonade app. Lemonade states that a third of claims made are settled instantly by artificial intelligence, with cash being received within 5 minutes.

To file a claim via the app, simply hit the “Claim” button and record a video stating the fault. Your claim will either be settled instantly, or a member of the Lemonade team will contact you with further questions.

FAQ’s

Which company does Lemonade use to underwrite its insurance policies?

Lemonade underwrites its own policies, and these policies are then reinsured. Reinsurance is provided by companies such as Everest, Hiscox, National Indemnity, Munich, and Transatlantic.

Will applying for insurance affect my credit score?

No, Lemonade runs a soft credit check on each application that will not affect your credit score.

Customer Support

Lemonade made its name with its online-only offering, but several reviews online claim that it is hard to speak to an actual person. Contrary to most people’s belief, there is a helpline available if you need to talk to a customer support agent alongside email forms.

We called the number listed in the “Contact Us” section of the FAQs, and after a few minutes on hold, we spoke to a customer service representative. We also submitted a question via the chat option, which was a far easier way to get our questions answered. If you need to contact customer service, your best option is to do so online for a quick response. Alternatively, there is an extensive FAQ section available that should be able to answer most common queries.

Privacy & Security

As you would expect from a company with social responsibility at the forefront of its operating procedures, Lemonade takes its privacy and security responsibilities very seriously. Lemonade has one of, if not the best, privacy policies we have reviewed, with a clear statement as to how your data is treated.

Even better, the company summarizes beautifully how your data is managed without confusing clients with confusing language. Lemonade states that your data will never, ever be sold to anyone. There are no adverse online reports about the mistreatment of personal data by Lemonade.

In Conclusion

There is a reason why Lemonade has grown from a small start-up to a leading insurance company with over 1 million customers in such a short space of time. The combination of an excellent social media presence, a real dedication to social responsibility, and excellently priced insurance premiums have been the drivers of Lemonade’s growth. Ultimately, we believe the company will continue to grow in future years.

Brand Disclaimer

“Lemonade” is the brand name for products and services provided by a group of commonly-owned companies that offer, distribute and service insurance. As used on this site, the phrase “Lemonade” also refers collectively to the following legal entities in the group:

Lemonade, Inc., a public benefit corporation organized under Delaware law, is the parent company in the group. The company provides certain personnel, facilities, and services to each subsidiary company in the group. It also owns 100% of four subsidiary companies supporting its US operations – Lemonade Insurance Company, an insurance corporation organized under New York law. This company issues your policy and pays your claims. It is licensed as a stock property/casualty insurance company in New York and in all other states where Lemonade non-life insurance is available.

As a Lemonade non-life insurance policyholder, you will have the right to select a “Giveback cause”, hereby joining a virtual group of people who made the same selection. Lemonade uses each group’s premiums to pay their claims and expenses, giving back leftover money to their common cause.

The availability and amount of excess funds are subject to Lemonade’s discretion and applicable insurance regulations. Yet, our stated intention is to calculate the amount of leftover money by subtracting from the group’s collective premium, our flat fee, the costs of claims, a “rainy day fund”, and other insurance expenses like reinsurance – and giving back what’s left (up to 40% of the group’s premiums).

Giveback is Lemonade’s policy and expression of intent, but it is not a contractual obligation to you nor to the cause you selected. We reserve the right to suspend or amend the Giveback policy from time to time.
